HISTORY

In 1885 the “Colonel” Jack Taylor purchased 338 acres from Enoch Talbert for $1,000.00 with the thought of building an upscale seaside resort. He designed and built a town with the hotel Casa del Mar as the main attraction. The hotel burned down in 1889 and Del Mar became dormant for about 15 years.

In the early 1900s when the South Coast Land Company began to develop San Diego County, Del Mar became alive again. A Los Angeles architect, John C. Curtis, was hired to draw plans for a new hotel, the Hotel Del Mar, which opened in 1910 and drew the Hollywood crowds from the silent movies. The main attractions were the Pier, the golf course, a bath house, a pool and its own powerhouse.

New homes started being built but everything came to a halt in the 1930s. The construction of the San Diego County Fair began in 1933 and 50,000 people came to the opening of the racetrack on 10/18/1936.

Bing Crosby was instrumental into making the Del Mar Turf Club a reality and Pat O'Brien became the President. The song “Where the Surf meets the Surf “ recorded by Bing Crosby is still played for the opening and closing of the racing. The racetrack grandstand became a bomber tail assembly production facility during World War II.

In 1959 it was incorporated as a city with the 2010 census it has a population of 4,161. The City Council with 5 elected representatives governs the City of Del Mar and a new mayor is elected every year from among the councilmembers. The Village offers great shopping with many specialty shops, boutiques, restaurants and Plaza del Mar is a destination for the locals, tourists and shoppers. There are wonderful views to the ocean from the Plaza.

 

DEL MAR REAL ESTATE

The price of real estate in Del Mar varies greatly as to its proximity to the ocean or if it offers ocean views. Many of the homes are custom built and there is even a castle up on the hills but there are also many tract homes.

Getting a building permit is rather difficult because of the ever protective Del Mar Design Review which preserves and improves the scenic amenities of Del Mar and protects the City's natural environment, its scenic vistas and the community's overall aesthetic quality. For new construction even the materials and colors are evaluated.

As of 4/8/2014 going back 4 months there were a total of 83 detached properties listed for sale ranging from a high of $33,900,000.00, an average of $3,481,881.00 and a median of $1,750,000.00. There were 48 sold homes with a high of $12,900,000.00, an average of $2,154,349.00 and a median of $1,522,500.00.

 

​CLIMATE

The weather is wonderful and conducive for outdoors living and entertaining. Temperatures rarely go over 90 degrees or under 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

 

SCHOOLS

Del Mar schools are part of the San Dieguito School District and rank very high amongst other schools in San Diego.

Torrey Pines High School is considered one of the best in the country.

 

UNIVERSITIES

At the center is the University of California San Diego (UCSD) located just south of Del Mar. which includes the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the San Diego Supercomputer Center.

University of San Diego (Catholic), National University , the Scripps Research Institute, the Burnham Institute (known for Cancer Research), the Salk Institute, San Diego State University, Alliant University and several other universities throughout San Diego.

Del Mar Beaches, Gliderport, Torrey Pines Reserve State Park, La Jolla Cove and Beaches, Downtown San Diego with the Gaslamp District, Seaport Village, Embarcadero, Balboa Park, Seaworld, San Diego Zoo, Museums, La Jolla Playhouse, San Diego Civic Center, Wild Animal Park, Coronado Island with world famous Hotel Del Coronado are only minutes away from Del Mar.
